With success comes failure

Unfortunately I write today with very little enthusiasm.  It's more difficult than I remember to actually drop even 5 pounds.

I felt I was doing very well. As I wrote in my last post, I've been eating healthy, exercising every day ....then came Friday evening where I took my first misstep and went to eat dinner at Frickers.  I had chicken nachos AND I picked at some fries from my boyfriends plate.  I know, I know but I figured it couldn't have been that bad since I had exercised that day (Insanity) and I only had one meal and a juice prior to the nachos.  After dinner we even went bowling, which I looked up and actually burns about 177 calories per hour- I bowled an hour for sure. (check out this link and see how much you burn from regular activities: http://www.nutristrategy.com/activitylist.htm)

Then came Saturday.  I refused to weigh myself because I didn't want to get myself down and whole heartedly regret the delicious nachos.  So I went about my day as normal.  I ate a healthy brunch and made a delicious juice.  So far so good.  I did my arm exercises with my 8 lb weights and I did dead lifts (which my Weightlifting friend William says is really great for back fat-if you need instruction on deadlifts:  http://www.5min.com/Video/How-to-Do-The-Deadlift-with-Proper-Form-122696451)

After this fabulous start, I knew it would not end well because I was going to a party that included booze and plenty of food since it was a potluck.  Needless to say my willpower failed me and I succumbed to everything, twice! lol!

Sunday I refused to weigh myself because the damage had already been done.  Instead I ate exceptionally healthy all day and I even went on a 9 mile walk!  That's right folks, 9 freaking miles!  I should also mention it was only 20 degrees yesterday.  I thoroughly enjoyed my walk because my new dear friend Ellen made it tons of fun and we were able to catch up.

Then came today.  I couldn't avoid it any longer.  I had to weigh myself.  152.6.  What a disappointment.  But I'm recharged and ready to rock and roll this week.  I'm kinda worried for this weekend though because it's my birthday Friday and I'm heading to Canada.  I am going to try to make the best decisions when it comes to restaurant eating but no promises at my romantic birthday dinner!

Last I want to share some tips I recently read in my Bazaar magazine:

Article was Titled "Lose the Last 5 Pounds for Good"
Tip 1: Cut alcohol and caffeine.  Consider this "If you're drinking more than 2 alcoholic beverages a week, you can DROP two to three pounds in the first two weeks simply by cutting them out"

Tip 2:  Drink 12-16 glasses of water a day (eek- totally guilty of not drinking enough water) Also drink decaf oolong tea "its been shown to increase metabolism by 10 percent..."  (I have yet to try it but will be searching for this particular tea)

Tip 3: Double up your workouts.  In the AM do compound exercises, try this
     1.  2 min jumping rope
     2.  20 sumo squats
     3.  15 burpees
     4.  10 traditional push ups
*I did this today and it really got the blood flowing
Then in PM do cardio- jog 30-45 minutes.  I think I'm going to do Insanity in the early evening instead.

So there ya go everyone.  Here's hoping you have had better results this week than me!

  1. Sheila! Sounds like you're doing a great job, Frickers and potluck aside! I'm also having trouble with the water. I love me some water, but I don't have the thirst for it so much when I'm really cold (so, like always now). Alcohol and caffeine are always rough for me! I've definitely cut back (Saturday night aside!) on drinking and cut beer out all together. Eating healthy and exercising is the easy part for me! It's the liquids that get me!
    Keep up the good work!!

  2. While I'm not happy that you've been so good only to look at the scale and see disappointment, I'm going to say, I feel you sister... same here exactly. This is not as easy at it was in our early/mid 20's!!!

Anyway, it's up to us to keep up the good work and not get too down on ourselves when the scale gives us bad news. I've also read the following article that may be helpful:

Again, I love that you are doing this blog. So needed!

  3. Stay motivated! It takes 21 days to form a habit, 4 weeks for you to see a difference, and 8 weeks for others and spouse! Keep up the good work and do not forget that cheating is a part of rewarding yourself and teaching your body. It also keeps you from over indulging. Limit yourself and never go to a party hungry! Always make yourself a healthy snack/meal before you leave to fight off the cravings. Or try picking one or two things you want to have at the party/potluck. It always helps to tell others about your goal. People will admire your self control and cheer you on. You will be surprised!
